Mentors

This week I want to talk about how important it is to have a mentor in your life. Whether you are young or old, there is always someone older and wiser that you can learn and take advice from. Proverbs 13:20 states, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm” (NIV). I have had and still have many mentors in my life. They invest in me, keep me accountable, and support me. You can be related to them or not, what matters is that you have someone. For example, there has been a couple who have invested in my brother and I since we were young. They came to our athletic events, supported us, came to our graduations, and were and will always be our ice cream buddies. I recently just got a text from them saying how they are still cheering for me, telling me that they are proud of me, and to serve and lead on. Hebrews 13:7 says, “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (NIV). Let this be an encouragement, no matter what stage of life you are in. If you have a mentor, fantastic. Cling to them and listen to their words of wisdom, maybe tell them how much you appreciate them. If you don’t have a mentor, start looking, ask someone, look for someone. A church is an excellent place to find a mentor. Also, be willing to mentor someone yourself. You would be surprised at what kind of impact that can make in someone’s life. For all those who have been a mentor to me, thank you. You all have made a huge impact in my life, and have helped shape me to become the person I am today. Thank you.
